CITIES - sculptures and land art
Haarlem
In 1984, the Municipality of Haarlem commissioned me to design and execute a sculpture for the central median of the Europaweg. As I consider my public space works to be 'site-specific sculpture,' my focus here was to respond to the motion of vehicles – experienced by drivers and passengers moving past the work. This meant the sculpture couldn't simply be a static object; it needed an elongated form with inherent movement to create visual tension. The resulting sculptural construction comprises three spiral segments, featuring alternating left and right twists. Simultaneously, this sculpture imparts a distinct identity to its location.
