In the summer of 1997 the exhibition of Finnish
art was organized in the Open Air Museum Drecht Banks Sculpture
Park (OPAM)
by Lucien den Arend. His attempts to realize this exhibition
- in fact - lead to his founding of the sculpture park itself.
Later that summer three of the Finnish artists who had participated
in the exhibition,
Jorma Hautala,
Kari Huhtamo,
and
Matti Peltokangas, met Lucien den Arend in Helsinki and
together they visited Hvittr äsk.
The complex is located about 30 kilometers
from Helsinki in Kirkkonummi, Finland. It was designed to be
a studio home for the members of Gesellius, Lindgren, and
Saarinen - a modern Finnish archtecture firm. It later
became the private residence of Eliel Saarinen. The design
was developed and construction began during the year of
1902. The house was named after Lake Vittr äsk, where it was
built. The word Hvittr äsk is Swedish for white
marsh.

Jorma Hautala and Lucien den Arend at Hvittr äsk,
it was built between 1901-1903, by the three architects,
Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen as an architectural
office and cultural home.
The four colleagues also visited site
specific works by Matti Peltokangas at
the Helsinki center and its University and
murals by Jorma Hautala at the Helsinki
Opera House by Alvar Aalto.
